Harmen Piekema (1982) was born in Koudum, a small Frisian village surrounded by fields, lakes and forests. Here his love for nature was awakened. His father taught him the tricks of the trade in (then still analogue) photography. Despite his love for nature, Harmen initially started as a studio and fashion photographer. But in early 2017 he followed his heart, and the raw beauty of nature won out over 'polished' studio models.

Despite living in the Netherlands, Harmen finds his inspiration mainly in rugged mountain landscapes, seascapes and severe weather. That is why he often travels to the Arctic to photograph there, and to accompany a photo tour. In addition, the Alps are regularly visited. In his own country, too, he seeks out the wilderness; Living in the north, the Wadden Sea has much to offer. The sea is almost completely dry at low tide, exposing spectacular structures and pools. A Valhalla for the landscape photographer! Every year Harmen takes a group of photographers on board the over 100 year old clipper Willem-Jacob for a great sailing and photography adventure on the Wadden Sea!

At the beginning of my landscape photography career, I realised that I needed to use filters to have full control over the light coming into my camera. Like every other photographer, I started with cheap plastic filters (to get used to working with them), and soon I ran into their limitations. I liked working with filters, but I didn't like the drawbacks such as blur, loss of light and overexposure through the plastic. Therefore, I started looking for glass filters. In my search I came across NiSi filters; high quality optical glass filters.

Just when I was about to make a selection of which filters to buy, I was contacted by Transcontinenta. They were looking for ambassadors for NiSi Benelux. What a coincidence! Of course I said yes and I have never regretted it. The filters are really high quality!

The nice thing about NiSi is that they keep developing. They don't settle for what they have now, but keep working on new products, better glass, better coating and so on. For me as a professional landscape photographer, this is very important! I want to use the best products available and with NiSi I feel I can.
